Early readers have come a long way since Dick, Jane and Spot. Some are now branded as graphic novel chapter books—like "Extraordinary Warren's World," by Sarah Dillard.
Warren may look like an "...ordinary, average, run-of-the-mill chicken." But he’s not. Warren lives on a farm with a bunch of his feathered friends, and is at the top of the pecking order. Warren is open to adventures—and he has plenty as he attempts to fly and tries to keep enemy forces like Millard the Rat in check.
Life gets exciting for Warren, especially after he bumps into a big egg on his wanderings. Millard the Rat couldn’t be more delighted with Warren’s find, imagining the scrumptious meal he’ll have—Chicken Supreme with an egg on the side. Alas, that’s not on the menu because the egg breaks open and a chick springs forth.
The little guy becomes Warren’s ward, a “sidekick” Warren’s not sure he likes buddying around with. The chick never shuts up, asking every "why" question in the book. But Warren grows fond of Egg and learns to be patient “…taught Egg everything he knew.” But not enough to keep Egg grounded—Egg tests his wings and gets good and lost.
Never fear, it’s Warren to the rescue in a story sure to engage readers with its winsome illustrations, abundant plays-on-words and zany cast of barnyard characters.
